Laminate & Floating Floors

Durable wood looks at a lower price, installed flat and quiet over the right underlayment.

Durable wood looks at a lower price

Laminate flooring has a high-density wood-fiber core with a printed wood image under a hard, clear wear layer. It resists scratches and dents well, which makes it a strong choice for busy living areas, bedrooms and homes with pets.

Floating floor installation

Laminate and other floating floors click together and rest on an underlayment instead of being nailed or glued. A good underlayment reduces noise and, over concrete, adds a moisture barrier. We trim door casings, leave expansion gaps and finish edges with baseboard or quarter round.

Laminate or luxury vinyl?

  • Laminate: harder surface, very scratch resistant, best in dry areas.
  • Luxury vinyl: waterproof core, softer underfoot, better for kitchens and baths.
  • Water-resistant laminates exist, but standing water should still be wiped up quickly.

Laminate & Floating questions

Laminate or LVP: which is better?

Laminate has a hard, scratch-resistant wear surface and a wood-fiber core. LVP has a waterproof core. Laminate is great for living areas and bedrooms; LVP is safer for kitchens, baths and laundry rooms.

Do floating floors need underlayment?

Yes. Underlayment cushions the floor, reduces noise and, over slabs, adds a moisture barrier. Some products have it attached; others need a separate layer.

Can laminate go over my old floor?

Often over vinyl or tile if it is flat and well bonded. Carpet always comes out first. We confirm during the estimate.
